Originally constructed in 1929, Florence Schneider Hall was on the verge of being condemned. A comprehensive renovation was designed to create a home for the Gatton Academy of Math & Science. Seventy-five rooms with 136 beds were created in a suite arrangement in which two rooms share a bathroom. In addition to student living spaces, social areas, a computer lab, collaborative learning spaces and faculty office spaces were created. All of the building’s systems were replaced inside and out. Two fourth-floor additions were designed over existing roof areas to provide additional suites and resolve life safety concerns. In 2016, due to growing demand, three new additions were designed blend seamlessly into the building and add 80 beds and a multipurpose space to the facility.
The importance of The Gatton Academy to Kentucky cannot be overestimated. The value it brings to this state and what we're doing to provide an opportunity for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors to achieve their full intellectual potential in a cohesive environment.
