Celebrating World Landscape Architecture Month

April is World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM), a time to recognize the vital role landscape architects play in shaping our communities and environments. At RossTarrant Architects, we are proud to have a crew of talented Landscape professionals who bring creativity, thoughtfulness, and passion to every project.

This year, WLAM encourages professionals to reflect on what makes landscape architecture special to them. Here’s what some of our team members had to say:

Kevin McCalla, Associate and Senior Landscape Architect:
“I love that as a Landscape Architect I get to listen to community members and help them realize their dreams and visions. It is especially meaningful that the work we do impacts the lives of children by creating environments for active play, quiet outdoor retreats, and team-building sports.”

Emily Kidwell, Landscape Designer:
“Landscape architecture is special to me because it has allowed me to view the world through a new lens—one that focuses on making beautiful and impactful spaces for all. My first visit to Central Park in New York was the moment I knew I wanted to enter this profession. Seeing people from all walks of life enjoying such a carefully designed space helped me understand the true power of landscape architecture in fostering both individuality and community.”

Grace Madden, Landscape Designer:
“I love landscape architecture’s unique capacity to merge the built environment with natural landscapes, crafting spaces that enhance human experience, learning opportunities, and ecological health. I enjoy creating opportunities that encourage students, teachers, and parents to interact with their school and its environment through play and sports.”

Angela Sanchez, Landscape Designer:
“I knew landscape architecture was the right field for me because of its similarity to motherhood and the work I did as a stay-at-home mom for 15 years. Both fields require understanding how seemingly unrelated factors—like the local economy, extreme weather events, and cultural preferences—shape opportunities and challenges. The creativity, resourcefulness, and holistic mindset I use as a mother have formed a solid framework for my work in educational design across Kentucky.”

From school campuses to community spaces, landscape architecture shapes how we interact with the world around us. This month, we celebrate the vision and dedication of our landscape architects who design meaningful, lasting spaces for generations to come.
