In January, Bowling Green High School unveiled an innovative addition to its campus: The Purple Brew, a student-run coffee shop serving a range of hot and cold beverages, along with freshly baked goods and fruits that qualify under the free breakfast program. This initiative isn’t just about offering a caffeine fix before class; it’s about empowering students with invaluable skills and experiences.
By integrating a student-run business into its curriculum, “The Purple Brew” is giving students access to a particularly diverse set of skills. Many of the student staff members had already honed their culinary abilities in the school’s Culinary Arts Department, providing them with a direct application for their classroom learning. Regardless of their educational focus, all of the new café’s student employees are required to complete much of the same training as school nutrition staff, imparting valuable insights into lifelong health practices.
While a high school coffee shop might seem unconventional to some, The Purple Brew mirrors the educational benefits seen in student-run banks, greenhouses and school supply stores nationwide. Students gain practical experience in financial literacy, business management, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving on a daily basis. Moreover, they refine crucial communication and interpersonal skills, recognized as key indicators of success in adulthood.
